Prepare The Way 1.2

Zechariah and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist were descendants from Aaron from the tribe of Levi. The lineage of Aaron is the line of high priests. Mary was a relative of Elizabeth as she too was a descendant of Aaron. Joseph belonged to the house of David, the son of Jesse. As Mary the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist were related, this means that Jesus and John the Baptist were cousins. “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.” Luke 1:26 Gabriel told Mary that she would conceive and give birth to a son and would call him Jesus. When Mary seemed troubled by this news and asked “How will this be since I am a virgin?” the angel Gabriel answered explaining The Holy would come over Mary. “Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” Luke 1:36

As we see throughout this passage, God orchestrates every detail to fall in line with his word and prophecy. “For no word from God will ever fail.” Luke 1:37 God blessed the line of Aaron and David years before. God orchestrated it so that out of those two lines not only was Jesus and John the Baptist brought, but also their parents. We see throughout the passage that God sent Gabriel to tell both Mary and Elizabeth of the The Holy Spirit as John was to be filled with The Holy Spirit and Mary was to have the The Holy Spirit overcome her as she would conceive the Son of God. Gabriel also told Mary of Elizabeth as she was six months pregnant. So, what does all of this display? Well, to begin, it displays how God’s word never fails. He fulfills everything he says he will do. This also displays how he works in wonderful ways intertwining everything for a greater purpose and it is good. Another thing that we see displayed is the mercy of God as he comforts Mary by allowing her to know of Elizabeth, someone she can find support in who would have encountered a very similar experience. So, when we pray to God or we feel like nothing is aligning in the moment, remember this passage. Remember that God orchestrated the most beautiful prophecy and designed it so each person involved would know it was coming true through him. Remember that he knew the troubles each person involved would face and how he placed someone to comfort and assist them through those moments. “For no word from God will ever fail” – Luke 1:37
